What to Wear for Your Boudoir Session

You've decided to take the plunge. You've booked your boudoir session. Maybe you're a bit nervous. Maybe you're just excited. Then it hits you. What should you wear?

The wonderful thing about boudoir is that it is a celebration of who you are in your most private state. There are really no rules when it comes to deciding what to wear. You're limited only by your imagination. That being said, I've compiled some ideas to help get you started planning your wardrobe!

Classic Lingerie

When you think of boudoir outfits, you may immediately think of lingerie. Lingerie comes in many forms such as bodysuits or teddies, rompers, bustiers, corsets, chemises, nightgowns or pajama sets, bra or bralette and panty sets, stockings and garters or suspender belts, and kimonos or robes.

While you should wear whatever you find most flattering on your body type, I find that fitted or sheer garments such as body suits and corsets tend to photograph better than flowy garments that are not sheer as these have a tendency to conceal the body's natural curves. This can sometimes cause you to look heavier than you are.

Oversized Sweaters and T-Shirts

An oversized sweater can be a comfy and cozy outfit choice for your boudoir session. These work well when they have a somewhat deep a v-neck which can be easily manipulated to show more or less skin as desired. A pretty, lacy bralette can be a beautiful piece to layer underneath the oversized sweater for a casual, feminine look.

Alternatively, a t-shirt and color coordinated underwear can provide a casual girl-next-door look. You could also pair it with tall or fuzzy socks. If you don't want an overly sexual outfit, this is a comfy and cozy way to go.

You could even opt for sweatpants or lounge pants paired with lacy underwear and a bralette if that's more your style.

Other Clothing Items

It can also be really fun to bring normal clothing items such as blazers, leather jackets, button downs, pencil skirts, or cocktail dresses. There are endless possibilities to be photographed with normal clothing in various states of dress.

Finishing Touches

Once you've chosen the majority of your boudoir wardrobe, you need to consider finishing touches. Do you have jewelry that is particularly lovely or sentimental? All types of jewelry suit boudoir from standard necklaces, bracelets, and rings, to more exotic options such as naval rings, body jewelry, or foot jewelry. You can even find bralettes made from rhinestones.

It is not uncommon to do a boudoir session before a wedding as a gift for the groom. Is this your situation? Consider bringing some bridal themed items such as a veil, garter, robe, shoes, or anything else that relates to your upcoming nuptials!

Finally, don't forget props! What do you love? Do you like makeup? Bring your favorite lipstick or mascara. If you like hats, bring your favorite baseball cap or fadora. Do you enjoy having a drink at the end of the day? Bring a bottle of your favorite rosé or champagne and a glass. Do you like to curl up with a cup of tea and a good book? Bring a book, a journal, a mug, or your favorite knit blanket. Do you want more of a sexy date night vibe? Bring a rose, sexy high heels, and some perfume.

What are your hobbies? If you spend time on the computer, bring a laptop. Do you love a spa day? Bring a towel, a facemask, and nail polish. Think about what you love and what makes you unique. Select your finishing touches to compliment it!

In Summary

The bottom line is that you should wear whatever makes you happy. Wear what feels like you and what makes you feel beautiful!
